Ranbir Kaur - the brave Jat girl

Over 150000 women serve in the US National Guard and Reserves, and over 200000 women are active in the United States armed services. Around 100000 of them have served in Iraq. But Ranbir Kaur is a little different - she is the first Sikh woman to join the United States Army. She served in the US army in Iraq, when she was around 19 years old.

Now, she is headed back to Iraq, after her stay was cut short due to injury from a malfunctioning automatic weapon.

All of 21 years, she is a Jat girl, born in India. Here parents were grape farmers, and migrated to US, when she was 7 years old. She joined the California National Guard in 2002, at the age of 17.

You can read about her in the book Sikhs Unlimited by Khushwant Singh.
